Dental Crowns and Bridges

Porcelain dental crowns and bridges are among dental offices' most common therapeutic procedures worldwide. Essentially, a dental crown serves as a cap for your damaged tooth, providing strength, improving appearance, and enabling normal function. The porcelain material mimics the natural tooth color, making the crown virtually unnoticeable.

On the other hand, a dental bridge is a prosthetic device utilized to fill a gap created by one or more missing teeth. It's essentially a series of crowns held together, bridging the space and restoring both function and aesthetics to replace your multiple missing teeth. For even more missing teeth, partial dentures can be made to give you a larger tooth bridge.

Do you have a gap in your smile? Do you avoid smiling because you don't want to show it to the world? Do you have missing molars or teeth on either side that make eating your favorite foods more difficult?

We want to help you restore your smile and natural eating functions. Call our office today at (440) 871-7040 and get your smile back.

What are Porcelain Dental Crowns?

Porcelain dental crowns are custom-fitted tooth prosthetics to replace your missing teeth or cover your damaged tooth. Crafted to mimic the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, they blend seamlessly with your natural dentition. They provide strength and improve the appearance of a tooth that might have been affected by decay, damage, or aesthetic imperfections.

Types of Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns can be categorized into three main types of crowns:

  1. Full Porcelain Crowns: These are entirely made of porcelain. They have the most natural appearance but are less durable than other types.

  2. Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns: These have a metal base covered with a layer of porcelain. They offer a good balance between aesthetics and durability.

  3. Zirconia Crowns: These are made from zirconia, a very strong material known for its durability. They are an excellent choice for restoring teeth that need to withstand significant chewing forces.

The Procedure for Getting a Porcelain Crown

Getting a porcelain crown is usually done in one, same day visit at Nick Gravino DDS!   You will love coming in and, in a couple hours, leaving with your brand new, life-like porcelain crown.

During your visit, we will prepare the affected tooth and take digital impressions (NO messy goop here).  Then, our highly skilled team will fabricate your new tooth using our in-office mill.  Once the milling is complete, we use a specialized staining and glazing process that will make your new tooth come to life.  Making your tooth look real is a step that other dental offices may skip, but we think you deserve the time and effort it takes to be sure your new tooth looks exactly like the ones you were born with.   All of this is done in one, same day appointment.

Call our office today at (440) 871-7040 to get your Same Day Porcelain Crown and improve your smile for life.

The Advantages of Porcelain Dental Tooth Crowns

Porcelain dental crowns offer numerous advantages, including:

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Porcelain crowns closely mimic the color, clarity, and texture of your natural teeth, making them an ideal choice for those seeking to maintain a natural appearance.
  • Durability: Although not as strong as metal crowns, porcelain crowns are highly durable and can last many years with proper care.
  • Comfort and Fit: Each porcelain crown is custom-made to fit your tooth perfectly, contributing to comfort and natural feeling.
  • Biocompatibility: Porcelain is a biocompatible material, which means it is less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritation in your mouth.
  • Stain Resistance: Unlike natural teeth, porcelain crowns resist staining, allowing for a bright and consistent smile over time.
  • Improved Functionality: Porcelain crowns restore the function of damaged teeth by allowing normal chewing and biting forces.

What are Porcelain Bridges?

Porcelain bridges are dental prosthetic devices that fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Like porcelain crowns, they are custom-made to match the natural color, shape, and size of your teeth. Besides restoring aesthetics, porcelain bridges also restore function to multiple missing teeth by enabling effective chewing and speaking and preventing shifting of adjacent teeth that can lead to bite and jaw problems.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are primarily three types of dental bridges:

  1. Traditional Dental Bridges: Porcelain Dental Bridges are the most common type of bridges, which involve creating a crown for your tooth or implant on either side of your missing tooth, with the artificial tooth or teeth in between. These bridges are held in place by your natural teeth or implants.
  2. Cantilever Bridges: In these bridges, the artificial tooth is supported on one side only. This type of bridge is used when your adjacent teeth are on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  3. Maryland Bonded Bridges (Resin-bonded Bridges): These are made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. Your artificial tooth is supported by a metal or porcelain framework. This framework is bonded onto the backs of your two teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. Since this type of bridge doesn’t require crowns, it’s a more conservative option when the adjacent teeth are healthy and free of large fillings.

If you have too many missing teeth for a dental bridge, another option is implant-supported bridges.

The Benefits of Porcelain Bridges

Porcelain bridges offer several benefits, including:

  • Natural Appearance: Porcelain bridges are designed to blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth, giving you a beautiful and natural-looking smile.
  • Improved Functionality: Porcelain bridges restore normal chewing and speaking abilities by filling in the gap that missing teeth create.
  • Preventative Measure: Bridges help prevent adjacent teeth from shifting and becoming misaligned, which can lead to bite problems and difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene.
  • Long-Lasting: With proper care, porcelain bridges can last many years, providing a long-term solution for missing teeth.

Comparing Porcelain Dental Crowns and Bridges: Similarities and Differences

Both porcelain dental crowns, dental implants, and dental bridges have unique advantages and applications when restoring your smile. However, they also share some similarities.

Similarities

Both dental crowns and bridges can be made of porcelain, a durable and visually appealing material that closely mimics natural teeth. They are custom-made to fit your mouth perfectly, ensuring comfort. They both offer improved functionality, restoring the ability to chew and speak normally. Additionally, both forms of dental prosthetics require at least two dentist visits for the fitting process.

Differences

Despite the similarities, dental crowns and dental bridges serve different purposes and are used in different situations. As the name implies, a dental crown caps a damaged tooth, strengthening it and improving its appearance.

In contrast, a dental bridge fills the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It bridges the gap with artificial teeth anchored by crowns fitted onto the adjacent natural teeth or implants.

Determining the Right Choice

Choosing between a porcelain dental crown and a bridge largely depends on your dental condition. A porcelain crown might be the best solution if a damaged tooth needs to be strengthened or enhanced aesthetically.

However, a porcelain bridge could be ideal if you have one or more missing teeth and the adjacent teeth are healthy enough to support a permanent bridge together.

It's best to discuss your options with your dentist, who can provide guidance based on your oral health needs and aesthetic desires.
